Solar Panels Create New Educational Opportunities At OMSI's Camp Hancock

Portland, OR (September 2, 2009) – The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry's (OMSI) Hancock Field Station has added solar power as an energy and educational resource to the camp facility. The solar panels were installed to raise student and community awareness about renewable energy technologies and will serve to offset portion of the facility's energy costs. The installation was made possible through the generous donation of more than $9000 in goods and services through Tanner Creek Energy, Lear Electric, SolarWorld, PV Powered, KPFF Consulting Engineers, and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation.

"Growing up with OMSI as I did, I was thrilled that Tanner Creek Energy could work with some great partners in making this project a reality," said Tanner Creek Energy founder and President Alan Hickenbottom. "Understanding the Hancock Field Station's mission, we thought solar would be a great addition to the site, not only for the energy it produces, but perhaps more importantly, for the educational opportunity it provides Hancock's 3500 annual camp participants."

"This solar installation brings together OMSI's commitment to sustainability, quality hands-on science education and community partnerships," said Travis Southworth-Neumeyer, director of OMSI's Outdoor Science Education. "Thanks to the hard work of all the project partners, we've taken a step towards energy independence at Hancock and built a new teachable moment for every guest at the facility."

Owned and operated by OMSI for more than 40 years, Hancock Field Station is located in Central Oregon's John Day River Valley, an area world-famous for its fossil-rich rock formations. Hancock Field Station functions as a full residential facility and as a base camp for trips to surrounding areas. Hancock's outdoor educational experiences include the study of paleontology, geology, ecology, botany, zoology, archaeology, ornithology, and astronomy. The solar panel installation will serve as a critical educational tool for all of Hancock Field Station's outdoor school programming.
