Solar energy is an on-site energy production
technology available to many building owners. Most solar
energy systems have no moving parts and an economic
life of 25-30 years. Because the energy is used where
it is produced, there are no transmission efficiency
losses. In addition, there are generally no utility
system upgrade requirements.
Combined with intelligent building design
and materials, along with standard energy efficiency
measures, photovoltaics can cut energy consumption from
the utility grid by orders of magnitude. Indeed, with
today’s design approach and available technology,
true “net-zero” buildings are a real possibility.
